Extra Storage but Chic & WOW

Isn’t storage always something we need? Especially when it comes to clothes and shoes? I DO need lots storage, but I am also kind of looking for extra storage that blends into my bedroom, doesn’t take too much space and that looks super chic. To much to ask? No! Keep it simple with chic & clean lines.

6 Tips to achieve the ultimate chic extra storage look:

  1. I am not a huuuge IKEA fan but I love the Malm Dresser. I don’t care if everyone has them. I have them and I have them my way. 😉
When it comes to a simple dresser with lots room, I am still going for it. Why not? The great thing is, the dresser comes in different sizes.
I added two 4-Drawer Chests in white together to make it bigger.
  2. Add Greens. To add a bit more personality I picked two snake plants that join me in my bedroom. One 6″ Pot that goes perfectly on the middle of both Dressers and one 10″ Pot besides the dresser to round up the space between dresser and bed. As already explained in my previous blog post, snake plants are an absolute MUST in any bedroom. Why? Read here more.
If you’re interested in plants, please feel free to visit my website www.vanteriorplants.com
  3. Candles. To give your bedroom a cozy flair candles are the easiest choice. You can get them in any size and any shape for any budget.
I picked mine from CB2 in Vancouver. I love the “Brass Candle Bowl” for only $20. This candle brings coziness, but also the glam glam effect into my bedroom.
  4. Jewelry Box. Sort out the jewelry you’re not wearing. Sell them on Marketplace, exchange them in a clothing swap or simply give them away. Pick a jewelry box that fits all your jewelry that’s left, but also suits your style. I picked a mirrored jewelry box that doesn’t take too much space on my dresser, but fits all my fave pieces. I got it a long time ago from Winners, but if you’re looking for something similar chic, I’d recommend the “Oro Champagne Gold Box” from Cb2 as well as the “Small White Marble Box“. Yes, I do love Cb2, but there is also others that caught my eye such as “Abbey Collection Jewelry Box” from Amazon for only $30.00. Chic Chic.
  5. Pictures / Posters. I love the Desenio posters. I am obsessed with their minimal abstract posters and I just can’t get enough. Check out their website and comment below your thoughts. Which ones are your favourites? Please find below some of my fave pieces from Desenio.

  6. Color scheme. Go with a color scheme that you can find within your whole bedroom first of all. I love white furniture with black, rose and gold accents and I sticked to it throughout my whole bedroom design. It looks very glamorous, but still bold. The white dresser doesn’t seem to take away too much room compared to if it was Walnut or anything similar in a darker finish. I’d recommend to stick to white furniture as you can always pop it up with accents in the end (and it’s much more cost effective to changeup the accessories instead the furniture pieces).

Please find some of my fave Desenio pictures on the left for your inspiration:

Thank you for dropping by. I hope you guys got inspired.
Have a great week.

Plants in your Bedroom? YES!

I am a big plant lover. I love being surrounded by those lovely creatures anytime anywhere. Nature is a big part of my life and inspires me every time I am hiking backcountry.

So, we know that we like to have plants around us, but can we have them in our bedroom? Many of my clients asked me this question and my answer is yes everytime!

Many plants are harmful, but some of the plants are absolute helpful and you should consider having those in your bedroom for a better & healthier sleep.

Please find below a list of plants that are more then welcome to accompany your beauty sleep.

The Snake Plant

The Snake Plant is an absolute special plant and one of my favourites.
And not only mine. NASA believes in the snake plant and list it on the top 10-air-purifying plants. One big reason is that the snake plant converts CO2 into 02 at night. Most of the plants only do so during the day.

Lavender

You may already know that Lavender is one of the best-known natural remedy for sleep and relaxation. Due to a lot of research, studies investigated that lavender odor improved sleep quality in a wide array of study participants.

English Ivy

Back to NASA’s list: The English Ivy. It reduced airborne particles of fecal matter by an average of more then 94% over 12 hours and levels of mold in the air went down by 78.5%. Heads up: If you have pets – keep it out of their reach.

Orchids, Succulents and Bromeliads

Those lovely plants are increasing the air quality at night. Most plants are absorbing oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide at night, but those wonders are rebellious and take in carbon diocese and release oxygen during the p.m. hours. The air is kept fresh at night. Who doesn’t want little working minions at night while sleeping?

In my opinion, mother’s nature is an absolute amazing and inspiring system. I can’t read enough about it and I hope this little introduction to plants was informative for you.

Please comment below if you have any questions or if you like to add another fave bedroom plant to the list?

If you are located in Squamish, B.C. Canada, Whistler or Vancouver, please feel free to visit me at my Home Studio. I am happy to show you around and introduce you to many plants that are looking for a home. 🙂

Happy Saturday!

Your checklist for an Easy and Cheap Way to improve your living room today

Move your Rug:
This is very important if you do have a rug in your living room. This is why I bring it up in the very beginning. I recommend to ensure your rug is located correctly and speaks positively with the rest of your surrounding furniture and decor. Have the rug sliding at least 10″ below the sofa and/or your lounge chairs. A rug creates a cozy area and is a beautiful statement, but it also can tore apart the area if it is “floating” between furniture and doesn’t have it’s “destination”. See below two examples how a rug can be placed.

How to do it:

How not to do it:

Tip: You may have noticed that in order to be able to move your rug into the right position, the rug shall be big enough for your room in first place. Big rugs make the room feel bigger, even though they may take much more space.

Warm Lighting:
Lighting in general is essential to set the ambient in a room.
To cozy up on a nice evening without having the full light blasting a light warm lighting fixture is the answer.
If you are about to go and get yourself a side table lamp next to your couch, get a dimmable lighting fixture. It will make your life so much easier. Trust me. If you already have your side table lamp, check the base of the bulb how much wattage it takes max. Go and buy a warm light bulb. It makes a huge difference. If it requires an LED bulb, go with flower kelvin number. This means the light will appear more yellow then white or blue.

I am showcasing below 3 of the lighting fixtures I adore by Muuto. A scandinavian brand so simple but WOW. And of course, they are all dimmable.

Decorative Items:
Be creative with decorative items. Some items might not be as “decorative” as for others. Once myself, I framed an old napkin or a receipt out of an old receipt book and put it on my self. Simple and cheap, but not everyone is the same. Find your simple & cheap decor that pops up your living room and underlines your stye. I’d recommend to visit a thrift store to get ideas and get inspired. It always works for me and while being there, you might find some good old gem.

Tip: If you don’t want to find yourself in the next thrift store close by you, take one of your old books and place them on your coffee table. A candle on top of 3-4 stacked books will do it as well. Books are interesting to open conversations but also a great way to decorate your space.

Plants make a difference:
Plants make a huge difference if you ask me. They are not only beautiful and some of them are flowering here and then, they also clean the air for you. I love plants and I can’t get enough of sake plants, fiddle leaf fig trees and cacti. If you feel like you are in need of a plant, but you are scarred to kill them, go with the one and only: the Snake Plant. It comes in different varieties and sizes and it’s super hard to kill. It doesn’t need much love and is one of the best plants cleaning your air.
Feel free and check out my plant store in Squamish or online at:

http://www.vanteriorplants.com

Frame Pictures:
We all know that feeling, having hundreds of pictures of the last vacation on the phone, but we never really have time to look at them, while they droning after hundreds of new pictures that have been taken the following day.
Show your pictures. Share your story.
And I don’t mean tattoo your story on your body, simply get a frame (thrift store? Facebook Market place?) and print your favourit pictures. Pictures that make you smile and take you back will bring good feelings in you and they look pretty on your sideboard. They can be a reason to start a good conversation as well.

Wallpaper up your room:
I know what you’re thinking: “This can’t be done. I live in a rental space.” Or “this is way too much work”. No! I know an easy & cheap way that requires only a bit of creativity. I love the Amazon Adhesive golden Tape (see link and picture below) that I can simply stick to any wall without damaging it.
My next project is the powder room. Stay tuned.

Amazon – CS Hyde Gold Metalized Polyester with Acrylic Adhesive .0022″ Thick

Picture example form Citychicdecor.com

Pillow Party Paradise:
You may know that I am obsessed with pillows. If not, now you know 😉
I love this cozy and comfy type of accessory that does not only bring you comfort and invites you to rest, but pillows also can be the highlight in your living room on your sofa, window sill or anywhere else you like to be comfortable. Pick a fun colour! Go bold! Or go with a seasonal style.

Thank you for your time. I hope you guys enjoyed my checklist.

Happy Thursday Evening.

How to master the initial interior design consultation

Nobody said it would be easy to become your own boss and especially working as your own boss. Besides the marketing, accounting and fun projects, there are first of all those design consultations to succeed to get a job.

How to master the initial interior design consultation?

Set up a meeting.

For a design consultation it’s best to set up a meeting. Once you called your client back, make sure you get the correct address and an overall idea of what the job is about. The worst is to step into a meeting and having no idea what it’s going to be about. It doesn’t hurt to ask a couple more questions beforehand. If you client feels uncomfortable to talk about the budget over the phone, fee that question for the meeting.

Send a follow up.

Once you set up an appointment, make sure that you follow up with your client about the meeting. This can be right after the phone conversation or the day before. This way, you make sure that the meeting day and time is understood on both sides. It’s also important to follow up with your client after the meeting. Guide your client what he/she will expect and what will be done next during your design consultation, but it doesn’t hurt to outline that in an email again.

Prepare.

Most important, for any meeting, be prepared. Make a list of things you need for a design consultation if you attend to forget things. I have 3 most important things: My phone, something to write and sketch and my measurement tape. It will help you being prepared for any questions your client may have.

Be yourself.

Don’t try to be someone else. Be true to yourself. Your client hired you because he/she is interested in YOU and your design, not someone else’s.
With your own energy and drive you will succeed and the client will be more then happy to have met you.

Guide your client.

Guide your client wherever you can. This meeting might be your client’s first design consultation and might not have the same experience as you do.
Everything that seem very usual to you, might not seem usual to your client.
Guiding your client includes as well making sure that the whole design process is understood and agreed. In lots of cases the designer has a certain way of design process, which might not be the perfect way for all potential clients. Which make me switch to our next and last point below.

Communicate with your client.

Figure out what exactly your client’s needs are while you are on site. This is the moment, where you can throw every single question in space and hopefully get your information you need. This is very important to get to know your client and his goals. Your goal is your client’s goal and a smooth process without any discrepancy. Make sure you and your client are on one page before your start the design process.

Write up an agreement.

After your consultation and a follow up email it’s important to write out all the goals and statements in an agreement, that have been discussed. That agreement will be a guidance for your client and yourself. It includes a description of the design process, how much work and hours you will apply to that job and your wage. This needs to be agreed and best signed by your client, before your design process starts.

I hope you enjoyed my little statement. Comment below if you have any questions or anything to add? Thank you.

Cheers, Sina

How to Work with a Designer?

For some of you it might seems very simple finding the right designer: Google –> Best designer in town –> Paying a bunch of $$ and awaiting results that reflect your inner dreams.
Exactly, your inner dreams and desire of your space!

We are designers, but not magicians.

To be clear from the start, we are talking about creative work. Design is intelligence having fun. No doubt, but there is so much more to it.

Finding the right designer and working together in a way, that we can produce a positive outcome in a timely manner. This is a checklist, knowing what to do and what to expect when hiring a designer.

Those are your first steps hiring successful your designer.

Find below 5 bulletproof points on your checklist you should know about before hiring a designer (or while you’re looking for one!):

  1. Know your Budget

Many times I have been to consultations where potential clients knowing what they want, but they have no budget in mind. 0.
I understand that the whole process can be very overwhelming and many steps are unknown, but we do know how much money we have in our pocket and are willing to spent. Trust me, it’s nothing scary to communicate your options. It will be much easier within the process to start with a clean slate.
When it comes to that question, we are asking to figure out your overall budget. How far can the design go in quantity and material of the furniture, millwork etc. We will base our choices and recommendations on that budget, which will make it much easier returning with a style guide and ideas, knowing the client will be able to afford it. Nothing worse then showcasing furniture that won’t be accessible, due to money aspects. This also occurs to a much faster result, where we come to our next point of view.

Know your Budget!

2. Time is Money

Depending on your communication with the designer, design service may include 4-6 revisions based on the options you would like to see, maybe it include only 2-3 revisions? All depending on your inquiry. But please keep in mind that more work means more time which means = it will cost you more.
Some Designers are working off a design service flat fee – which works – but only if it outlines for example how many revisions this flat fee includes. Any additional work done outside that agreement, will be billed as usually per hour. There is no way around it. Work is work.
Tip: If you’re unsure what you want, communicate that to the designer and take the time to look through your Pinterest with your Designer finding helpful information you like and dislike.

Keep in mind that time is money.

3. Recognizing that our Job is a JOB

You may think by now – I have the best idea – I call my friend, she is a great designer and would love to help. How often have we called friends and family member for help in whatever they are good at? Asking my aunt for her great recipe, asking my dad for help with the PC trouble. Lot’s of time we call the people we know. Calling you designer friend for some tips and tricks may happen, too. And I am pretty sure they would love to take some time out of their busy designer life for you. But, many times, it takes a lot of time. It results in many hours, bringing up ideas, communicating with manufactures, furniture stores, making sure you’re getting the designer discount, taking some phone calls etc etc.
It may look like it’s “just a quick consultation for tips and tricks”, but as we all know – some tips and recommendations may lead into further questions or requiring additional assistance. Your friend will automatically do what it takes to not disappoint. All this work is time consuming. That said, it’s hard work. Please recognize that. If you have a friend or family member that is a designer, please value their work and if they keep offering their help finishing a project with you, thank them and pay them!
This is not a Hobby – It is a JOB!

Please value our job!

4. Plan way ahead

Many Designers having a wait list. Get on it! As soon as you know you are going to built, renovate or whatsoever which include a designer in the (near) future – plan ahead of time. Save your frustration being on a wait list that will not make the deadline.
Besides, if your designer of your choice would be available sooner then later, furniture or millwork might not be on time. Keep in mind, that some furniture will take it’s time to be manufactured. For example Office Furniture from Knoll is taking an approx. time of 8 Weeks including manufacturing, shipping, delivery and installation.
Also, please allow the designer proper time to figure out the concept and do revisions before ordering can begin. It’s totally doable, but plan ahead.

Begin to plan as early as you can.

5. Talk to us

Always talk to us. We are a service industry and we may or may not have everything designed the way you 100% like it. Before moving on for example ordering the final parts per area – please speak up! It’s ok to ask for changes. It would be much worse to not say anything and the final order is submitted, that can’t be changed or cancelled – especially items made to order.

Communication between client and designer is essential!

I hope this helps on your exciting journey working with a designer! If you have any questions, please let me know.

Picking your Kitchen Countertops

Renovating? Building your new home?
In any case, nothing is harder then picking your Kitchen Countertops.
That’s at least my opinion. We just received the Countertops this weekend and I can tell you, it wasn’t a very quick decision. There are many aspects that need to be considered before placing the final order for your most Kitchen Countertops. Besides, the pressure is high considering that the kitchen is one of the most important places in a home, to be the centre of every event by friends and family, over the past hundreds of years.

Well, have you thought your Countertop Options through and how will you decide?

The most important steps you may want to consider are the following:

  1. Material
There are lots of different materials that can be used for your kitchen countertop. Depending on your needs and lifestyle, either or are the best fit for you.
Let me introduce you to the most common ones:
QUARTZ: one of my favourite option for Kitchen Countertops, as it’s though and durable, which is great for busy families with kids. t’s man-made and nowadays are finishes available that look like natural stone.
GRANITE: Durable and affordable. My absolute favourite is the “Dark Water” Granite from Margranite. (Which you can see in the featured picture).
MARBLE: Absolutely gorgeous, but stains and scratches easily. Never forget to seal the countertops and clean very thoughtful.
CONCRETE: Modern and durable, stunning but also simple. (We have decided for Concrete Flooring. Getting it all smooth and buffed was an act itself! I’ll tell you another time!).
  2. Design
It’s quite overwhelming choosing the right finish. It starts by visiting  a countertop shop or manufacturer the first time. The choices are endless, it seams.
It’s great to have your own designer in this case. Not only to help picking the right finish going well with your wall paint, cabinet finishes, flooring, but also to receive a great price/discount for your new countertops.
If you decide to choose your countertops by yourself, I’d recommend to visit 3 countertop places and getting 3 quotes at least.
You can compare then pricing and besides, not every countertop place offers the same brands. Make sure you compare and decide wisely.
Tipp: Choose a couple samples of the most interesting finishes and take them home. Its ver important to see the countertop finishes at your own place, as the lighting may be completely different.
  3. Hands On
I always encourage clients to choose, see and feel their slabs. After they made a decision for the finish, a sample can look a little or much different to the actual slab that would be installed. Talk to your supplier and find out if you can see the slabs in person before they start cutting your countertop. Besides, they usually need a day of a heads up to pull the slab into position to be presented to you. Give them a call in advance.

    IMG_6460
Book an appointment to look at your slab.
  4. Installation
The final installation shall be booked with 100% professionals. Make sure that the installation crew visit your site before cutting the countertops. usually it’s in the price included and you’ll be ensured that they will take accurate measurements.

Don’t worry, be happy.

In any case, the most important part is that you are happy with your Kitchen Design in the end. It’s nothing that usually changes yearly and the money shall be well spent.
Take it serious, but also don’t let it overwhelm you and trust your guts. In the end, you can count in them or if it’s just too much, consider consulting a designer. We are here for you. And believe me, the pressure is gone once you see the countertops in place. Amazing.

Cozy Fall Fashion & Interior

Cozy up with my Cozy Fall Fashion and Interior “Hint & Highlights“. ♥

It’s the time o the year and as much as I am looking forward to this crazy cool Christmas Party coming Saturday, I am also really looking forward to cozy up and snuggle with my man on Sunday at home. There is nothing more in the world I can wish for (and maybe a new pair of leopard boots!).

Cozy Fall Fashion and Interior 2018.001

  1. Some Blackberry Absinthe Diffuser are always handy – I personally like them in the bathroom. Make sure you turn the wood reeds upside-down about every week. That’s how you keep the smell flowing.
  2. This hairband is just so awesome that I bought already multiple colours.. It drys super quick, looks great and cute with its little bowtie AND it does what its meant to be for – it keeps your hair out of your face.
  3. If you haven’t noticed yet, The Cross also offers jewelry besides Furniture and other cute little Home Decor items. My current fave is this adorable necklace with the Double Hearts. So romantic.
  4. The Tibetan Lamb White Pillow is always on my list and HAS to be mentioned in this article – coziness overload.
  5. I love Vintage and so do I love this Vintage Cotton Pajamas. 100% Cotton and currently on Sale at Nordstrom.
  6. Cozy up under this blanket with your sweetheart. Maybe some popcorn and a good movie, too? 100% Cotton and only $29.99 from Ikea.
  7. It does not only look good in your hand it also delivers hot chocolate straight to your mouth – if you want to. This real classy mug is 22K Gold for only $13.99 on sale at The Bay.
  8. When I saw these the other day I couldn’t even decide which colour my favourite is. So I had to leave and think about it before I’d buy more then one pair. Those pom pom slippers are just adorable, cute and super comfy staying at home for some snuggle time.
  9. One hot chocolate (I cannot drink coffee – not handling coffin real well) and one Croissant please. 😉 Order some hot stuff from your babe this weekend from this handy tray. What up?
  10. Last but not least – have the right setting for the cozy day and night time with your darling. Those Christa Tealight Holders will brighten up your night, but just as much as you need it to….

Happy Friday and a great start into the week. ♥

Best Christmas Decor & Gifts at 5 Furniture Stores in Vancouver

Christmas is earlier here then you think. I know, I know you might think I am crazy (I AM crazy!), but Xmas basically just around the corner – 8 Weeks to go

Boom!

It hits you and you aren’t prepared? Your place still looks like Halloween was yesterday, or even the Bunnies from Eastern are around (trust me I found eggs months later…ups)?Give your place a nice Christmas flair and why not starting earlier looking for the best decor then being too late or hustling to get the last pieces available (and battling at over crowded places with everyone trying to find the right thing)? Be on top of things (even if you’re not going to buy them in November), it’s a great feeling being under control (if you can).

Great Christmas Gifts?

Besides, there are great Christmas gifts out there that are ready to be taken home. I personally plan Christmas presents earlier… usually end of November. Time is running so fast and with all the Christmas Dinners coming up in December, I basically have no extra free minute to inform myself about Christmas present options (and I don’t like to buy random gifts, they need to match the character of the lucky one!!) or my home decor!

Excuses, yes, but generally speaking, I like to plan in advance (actually, a lot of things in life, when I realize I have the chance to!! Lot’s of times you just simply can’t).

Take the Chance…

…and let me make your life easier with 6 best Furniture Stores – located in Vancouver – to fulfill your need for amazing Decor for your sweet home or your sweet friend? Pillow Fight in the Guest Bedroom

One Bed? = Many pillows.
That’s a simple conclusion – in my mind.
Thats exactly what I am thinking of when it comes to home decoration and design for any Bedroom. And so typically as it is, between man and women – my boyfriend imagines something else: “Less pillows. They aren’t useful! Why do we need so many Pillows?” .. Why being always so practical, and who said that decorative pillows are’t useful… (pillow fight?)

Despite of whats everyones preference, …

how many pillows are actually suppose to be on a bed?

And aren’t pillows just – pillows? Clearly not! Besides different texture and colours, there are different variation of pillows – pls find below my list of pillows that are (luckily) existing in this world:

So, how many pillows are suppose to be on a bed? Simply ,it’s the matter of the size of the bed. But there is no real rule that has to be lived by to make your bed cozy and beautiful, even though I have my own 5 little rules.
Please see below & enjoy my

5 *pillow-recommendations*:

  1. TWIN Bed:
Starting with the smallest size of the standard beds – the twin bed. I’d recommend not more then (1) Regular Sleeping Pillow, (1) Standard Sham Pillow and (1) 18″ Square Decorative Pillow. The picture below is showing a twin bed with (2) 18″ Square Decorative Pillows, which I feel like is overloaded (and thats ME saying too many pillows!!??!!), but sometimes is less more.

    apartment-bed-bedroom-1501272
Twin Bed with too many pillows can look overwhelming.

  2. Full / Double Bed:
A double bed shall have (2) Standard Sleeping Pillows with (2) Standard Shams and to finish up the decorative part (2) 18″ Square Pillows. The 18″ Square decorative pillows can be easily replaced by (1) Bolster Pillow (if Mr. Right prefers less pillows –  5 pillows might sound better then 6 in total…).

    double-bed-1215004_1920
This Double Bed is looking quote empty with only (2) Sleeping Pillows.

  3. Queen Bed:(2) Sleeping Pillows, (2) Shams and (2) 20″ Square Decorative Pillows. With that little extra inch on each pillow, the size of the queen will be much more noticeable. Also, feel free to add (2) Euro Sham Pillows – Bigger Bed, bigger (and more) pillows.Feel free to replace the (2) Decorative Pillows with (1) Bolster, but make sure you pick a LARGE Bolster in this case. Going with smaller Decorative Pillows/Bolsters, would make the bed look smaller then it is.
    49-bed-pillow-arrangement
    Simple and clean lines.
  4. King Bed:The King Size Bed is my absolute favourite size of bed. Not only because it gives me the opportunity for lots of pillows, but also because I have lots space to sleep and move around (I am tall, active and need my space when it comes to stressful days / nightmare times). I’d recommend using besides the (2) King Sleeping Pillows (Make sure you buy the King Size Sleeping Pillows AND the King Size Cover!!), (2) King Shams and (2) 20″ Square Decorative Pillows. Now the fun begins, because you can easily add (3) Euro Sham Pillows to that Bed, too. Unstoppable. Incredible.

Another interesting combination with (2) Bolster and (2) Square Pillows (thecolumbia.club)
  5. Daybed:A Daybed does not have to be just a daybed, sitting in the corner of a room. If it is an additional bed in your office, barely used? Take it as an advantage. Make it cozy and inviting. I’d recommend using (2) Sleeping Pillows and (3) Euro Shams. If more space allows (and the husband) use (2) Standard Shams to fully cozy it up.Besides, the (2) small Bolsters on each end are a MUST. Classic and chic.

Inviting Pillow Arrangement

This said, there are many options and even my rules are not applying to every interior design project I have been working on. So, do what feels right.

And if Mr. Right doesn’t agree – (maybe after a pillow fight he will notice that more pillows are an advantage for more fun..) there will be always plenty of time to sneak in one or two more pillows without him even noticing. 😉

Cheers,
Sina

PS. Stay Tuned with the hints & highlights. In one of my next Blog Posts, I will talk about the most current and stylish Pillows you can get or your money these days.
